Curatorial context

Love on the Canals – 30 Years of the Canal Parade delves into the development of the world-famous boat parade that has become a hallmark of Amsterdam’s summer festival season. Since its inception in 1996, the parade has transformed from a local initiative aimed at attracting visitors into a global phenomenon, serving as both a celebration and a cultural platform. The exhibition highlights this journey using diverse archival photographs and deeply personal stories that trace the parade’s impact over three decades. Running alongside the WorldPride 2026 festivities, the exhibition also features textile works by queer activist and artist Yamuna Forzani, whose creations offer a utopian vision of queer life and community. Developed with guest curator Gijs Stork, the exhibition contextualizes the parade within the broader landscape of Dutch queer history, acknowledging significant milestones such as the 80th anniversary of COC Nederland and the 25th anniversary of same-sex marriage legalization in the Netherlands.
