Curatorial context

H’ART Museum presents 'Jan Dibbets 1966-1976 – Toward Another Photography,' the first major solo exhibition in Amsterdam dedicated to Jan Dibbets (b. 1941) since 1972. This exhibition delves into a defining decade of the artist’s career, during which he transitioned from painting to primarily using photography. Through an extensive collection of documents and archival materials, the exhibition contextualizes Dibbets’s work within the burgeoning international art scene of the 1960s and 1970s, a period that saw the rapid development of conceptual art, arte povera, and Land Art, movements in which Dibbets was not only involved but often a pioneer. The exhibition specifically highlights works from his initial 'perspective corrections' in 1967 to his 'color studies' of the mid-1970s, demonstrating his critical examination of the photographic apparatus and its role in art. Beyond his photographic innovations, the exhibition also provides a rare opportunity to view some of Dibbets’s rarely shown non-photographic works from these formative years, including cinematographic and sound pieces, installations, and sculptures, offering a comprehensive look at his radical impact across various mediums.
