Snogeiros – People of the Snoge offers a rare glimpse into the daily life, traditions, and stories of the community gathered at the historic Portuguese Synagogue in Amsterdam. Through the photography of Marte Visser, visitors are invited to discover the faces behind the monumental walls of the 'Snoge' during its 350th anniversary.
For over three centuries, the Portuguese Synagogue in Amsterdam, fondly called the 'Snoge', has served as a vibrant hub for a community that gathers, learns, and celebrates together. This exhibition marks the 350th anniversary of the synagogue by inviting the public to step inside and engage with the stories and traditions that continue to shape this historic site today. Photographer Marte Visser was granted exceptional access to document the daily lives of the people who make up this community, focusing on moments of intimacy, ritual, and connection.
Visser’s work is characterized by a cinematic eye and a keen focus on the human experience, using light to highlight subtle gestures and small interactions that reveal profound human truths. A poignant connection is drawn in the exhibition to the legacy of Rembrandt van Rijn, who famously lived in the neighborhood and shared friendships with its residents. By documenting the contemporary community in a space so deeply intertwined with historical figures like Rembrandt, Visser creates a unique bridge between the past and the present, inviting visitors to observe, reflect, and ask questions.
