Exhibition summary

This exhibition explores the history of the LGBTQIA+ community within the Dutch Lutheran church from the 1950s to the present day. Through personal stories, archival materials, and contemporary portraiture by Jesse van den Berg, it highlights the church's role as a pioneer in queer emancipation and faith-based inclusivity.

Curatorial context

This exhibition documents the remarkable journey of the Lutheran queer community in the Netherlands, tracing its evolution from the mid-20th century to modern times. It examines how this faith community established an early, safe space for LGBTQIA+ individuals and poses broader questions about how society can learn from these experiences of inclusion and multicolored community building. The narrative is constructed through intimate personal stories, archival records, and a series of monumental portraits by photographer Jesse van den Berg, which are displayed in the church hall windows to symbolize the dialogue between the religious space and the world outside. Running concurrently is an additional exhibition in the museum’s Regents' Rooms titled 'We Carry Forward: Queer Horizons of Imagination,' curated by Andrea Knezović. This secondary showcase features seven international artists who explore 'queer futurity' through concepts of memory, embodiment, and alternative futures. Together, both components of the project challenge dominant societal truths, celebrate marginalized histories, and envision more creative, inclusive ways of living. Following its presentation at the Luther Museum in Amsterdam, the exhibition is scheduled to travel to various other Lutheran venues throughout the country.
