Exhibition summary

This exhibition showcases the colorful results of craft workshops focused on the Amsterdam School style, held for local residents of the Spaarndammerbuurt. The project aimed to foster connection among participants and a deeper appreciation for their neighborhood, culminating in a display of their creations.

Curatorial context

In the autumn of 2021, Museum Het Schip collaborated with Buurthulp West and Hebron to organize a series of craft workshops for neighborhood residents. The resulting colorful artworks are now on display at Hebron in the Polanenstraat, following an initial showing at Museum Het Schip's post office. The workshops, which ran from September to November 2021, introduced residents of the Spaarndammerbuurt to the Amsterdam School style, its artists, architects, and their distinctive neighborhood buildings. Participants engaged in traditional Amsterdam School crafts such as batik dyeing, linocut printing, and tile making. Through guided tours and hands-on activities, participants not only learned about the artistic movement and each other but also developed a new perspective on their own community. The exhibition serves as a colorful bridge between the neighborhood and its inhabitants, forming part of Museum Het Schip's ongoing 'De Verbinding' (The Connection) program. The project received support from the municipality of Amsterdam ('West Verbindt').
