This exhibition showcases the colorful artwork created by local residents of the Spaarndammer neighborhood during a series of craft workshops. Inspired by the Amsterdam School style, participants explored techniques like batik and linocutting, fostering a deeper connection with their community and neighborhood.
Organized in the autumn of 2021, this neighborhood exhibition, titled 'Buurtexpositie in postkantoor,' was a collaborative project between Museum Het Schip, Buurthulp West, and Hebron Amsterdam. The initiative aimed to engage local residents by introducing them to the Amsterdam School style and its connection to the Spaarndammer neighborhood. From September to November 2021, participants attended workshops where they learned authentic Amsterdam School crafts such as batik, linocutting, and tile making, resulting in a collection of vibrant artworks.
The project encouraged participants to explore their neighborhood and each other through guided tours of Museum Het Schip and discussions on topics like 'How do you live?', 'What is important in your neighborhood?', and 'How do you see yourself?'. This process not only helped residents get to know each other better but also fostered a new perspective on their surroundings. The exhibition, displayed in the windows of the post office at Spaarndammerplantsoen, serves as a colorful connection between the neighborhood and its inhabitants, highlighting their creative output.
