Curatorial context

From August 9 to October 27, 2024, the National Archives of Modern Architecture in Tokyo will host the exhibition 'Explorations of Sutemi Horiguchi: Modernism, Rikyu, Garden, Waka'. Sutemi Horiguchi (1895-1984) was instrumental in establishing Bunriha Kenchiku Kai, Japan's first authentic modern architectural movement in the 1920s. His significant contributions to international-style architecture in Japan during the 1930s were marked by a profound grasp of Western architectural trends and deep research into Japanese tea houses and sukiya-style architecture. Following World War II, Horiguchi's modern sukiya-style designs became highly influential. Active from the 1920s to the 1970s, he was a preeminent architect in Japan. His creative genius extended beyond architecture and gardens, encompassing a wide range of genres due to his deep knowledge of the tea ceremony and waka poetry. This exhibition highlights the results of Horiguchi's distinctive spirit of inquiry and creativity.
