Exhibition summary

This exhibition showcases 'Het Eiland,' an architectural and urban planning project by Marek Sapinski, born from his imagination. It chronicles the development of over 20 fictional cities and an entire island nation, Republika Marka, over 50 years, originating from childhood drawings.

Curatorial context

“Het Eiland” (The Island) presents an extensive architectural and urban planning project by Marek Sapinski, driven entirely by his imagination. The concept began humbly in Poland during the 1960s with a 12-year-old Marek, influenced by his father, state architect Janusz Sapinski, who drew buildings in a checkered notebook. Over the following 50 years, this initial spark evolved from 2D sketches to 3D designs, culminating in the creation of more than 20 distinct cities that eventually claimed their own island, christened Republika Marka. This exhibition serves as a deeply personal document of Marek's journey. Now a seasoned urban planning draughtsman, a political refugee from the 1970s, and a Polish-Dutch national, he has charted a unique path to establishing a completely new country on the map. The project details its own history and development, offering a singular vision of world-building and creative endeavor. The exhibition is housed in the lunchroom of Museum Het Schip and is accessible from Tuesday to Sunday between 11:00 AM and 5:00 PM.
