The exhibition 'Indonesia and the Amsterdam School' travels from Museum Het Schip to the Erasmus Huis in Jakarta, running from October 17, 2024, to January 11, 2025. It delves into the historical connections between Indonesian art forms, culture, and architecture, and their impact on the Dutch Amsterdam School of design and architecture. During the Dutch colonial era, Indonesian objects and influences found their way to Europe, shaping the expressive styles and symbolism of the Amsterdam School. The exhibition prominently features the life and work of Chinese-Indonesian architect Liem Bwan Tjie, who studied under Michel de Klerk and contributed to iconic Amsterdam School buildings. After returning to Indonesia, Liem became a leading architect, integrating modern design with elements of the Amsterdam School, Art Deco, and his Chinese heritage in significant projects.
This presentation in Jakarta specifically highlights Liem Bwan Tjie's career, showcasing never-before-seen furniture designs alongside drawings and photographs. The exhibition coincides with the publication of an English-language book, 'Indonesia and the Amsterdam School: When Culture Crosses the Ocean,' featuring contributions from international authors. A public program will also accompany the exhibition, further exploring the cultural exchange between the two regions. A special Indonesian translation of the accompanying book is also presented, aiming to make the content accessible to a broader audience.
