Exhibition summary

This exhibition explores the profound relationship between the Amsterdam School architectural movement and Indonesia, its former colony. It showcases how Indonesian forms, colors, and materials deeply influenced Dutch architects and designers.

Curatorial context

From December 1, 2022, to August 27, 2023, Museum Het Schip presents an exhibition delving into the connection between the Amsterdam School and Indonesia. Through film, photography, drawings, prints, and applied arts, the exhibition illustrates the deep impression Indonesian forms, colors, and materials had on the innovators of the Nieuwe Kunst and the Amsterdam School. The Dutch architects studied Indonesian temple complexes, vernacular architecture, and crafts with great interest and appreciation. While some traveled to the Dutch East Indies, many gained insights during international world exhibitions, such as the 1910 exhibition in Brussels showcasing Indonesian crafts like batik and weaving. The exhibition highlights how elements like the curved roofs of Minangkabau houses from Sumatra were mirrored in Amsterdam School architecture from the 1920s. Other Indonesian motifs, such as the 'gunungan' and the mythical 'naga' dragon, were incorporated by Amsterdam School designers into furniture, brickwork patterns, and art objects. The exhibition also incorporates an Indonesian perspective through film fragments featuring Indonesian experts on art and architecture discussing these influences.
