Curatorial context

From July 9 to August 25, 2024, Museum Het Schip's lunchroom hosts an exhibition by artist Vincent van Oss. Van Oss views the Amsterdam School, characterized by its Expressionist style, undulating movements, geometric patterns, and references to flora and fauna, as an overlooked movement in Dutch culture, overshadowed by De Stijl and New Objectivity. He seeks to re-engage this movement with contemporary art through his installations and photographs, merging elements from the Amsterdam School's era with present-day concepts to generate new images and interpretations and breathe new life into the movement's inherent dynamism. For instance, he translates Hildo Krop and Piet Kramer's sculpture of a flute-playing Faun into a pan-flute bridge, and a replica of a Krop worker with a large rocking horse signifies openness towards Krop's life themes. Vincent van Oss, based in Amsterdam, graduated from the St Joost Academy in 's-Hertogenbosch in 1984. His previous exhibitions include 'Andy's 15 minutes of Fame' at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam in 2007, 'Corona-Archives' at Nieuw Dakota in Amsterdam in 2020, and 'Doubt & Belonging' at Rozenstraat a rose in Amsterdam in 2023. All works displayed in the exhibition are available for direct purchase through the artist.
