This exhibition showcases 'Strange Symbols from the Homes I Want to Live In,' a series of silk textile works by artist Limo Hair. The pieces are created using traditional techniques like patchwork and quilting, with symbols collected from the decorative elements of buildings in Amsterdam's Baarsjes district, repurposed as talismans during a period of personal instability.
Lunchroomexpositie Limo Hair presents 'Strange Symbols from the Homes I Want to Live In,' an exhibition featuring textile works by Miami-born, Amsterdam-based artist Limo Hair. Over three months, Limo Hair documented buildings in the Baarsjes district, collecting symbols from their decorative features and forms. During this research, she faced the prospect of losing her home, leading her to use these collected symbols as talismans for stability. The exhibition displays numerous silk textile works where she ritually reproduces key symbols, guided by her thoughts and hopes.
The artist's practice is rooted in ritualistic and historically informed textile craft, with silk as her primary medium. She utilizes techniques such as patchwork, appliqué, and quilting, often employing recycled materials and natural dyeing processes. Her work is deeply influenced by the symbolism found in the architecture of the Amsterdam School, as well as folk art and esotericism. This exhibition offers a unique perspective on how personal experience and architectural heritage can be interwoven through craft.
Limo Hair is also involved in 'Art Nouvhoes,' a collaborative project with Max Bouttell that archives and reflects on late 19th and early 20th-century Amsterdam architecture. Works exhibited are available for direct purchase from the artist; interested parties can contact her via email or Instagram.
