Curatorial context
From July 10 to August 28, 2023, Museum Het Schip's lunchroom hosts 'The impossible dream of equality' by artist Man Pan Lau. Lau, who grew up in Hong Kong and earned his Master of Fine Art in Groningen, uses painting as his primary medium but extends his exploration of identity and freedom to other forms. His experiences with travel and migration inform his study of otherness, the definition of a homeland, and prejudices.
In this exhibition, Lau examines the concept of the brick from a new perspective. Instead of using actual bricks, he creates them through castings. He reflects on social equality by applying a glaze reminiscent of Delft blue to these objects. This glazing technique bears a strong resemblance to Chinese porcelain, historically a luxury good reserved for the upper class. By using this glaze, Lau plays with ideas of accessibility, aesthetics, and imitation to question the equal rights of the worker. He breaks down the barrier between art and viewer by allowing everyone to touch the artwork, emphasizing a hands-on, accessible approach.
