Curatorial context

Running from February 25 to March 30, 2025, in the Museum Café, 'Sfeer verzorgen' showcases the work of multidisciplinary artist Rosanne Speet. Speet draws inspiration from her surroundings, employing various materials and artisanal techniques, adapting her approach to the possibilities and limitations of her chosen mediums. The exhibition includes a selection of Speet's previously created tufted carpets, which are inspired by flowerbeds found along footpaths, cycle paths, and roads. These vibrant patches of nature are presented as a deliberate contrast to the paved and built urban environment, aiming to maintain a pleasant city atmosphere, echoing the garden city concept. The tapestries merge plants and flowers into a paradisiacal imagery, preserving the idea of the flowerbeds while abstracting the urban context. In addition to her earlier works, Speet has created a new series for Museum Het Schip focusing on houseplants. This series delves into the late 19th-century bourgeois movement that promoted self-improvement for the working class, including initiatives like floral associations that encouraged the maintenance of houseplants. With the advent of the Aalsmeer flower auction in 1920, keeping houseplants became more accessible and affordable. Speet has selected plants featured in horticultural books from 1920 to 1935 to illustrate the types of plants that might have adorned workers' homes, prompting reflection on how our use of houseplants differs today from that era.
