This exhibition showcases the work of four artists—Gert Jan Kocken, Remy Jungerman, Jan Rothuizen, and Qiu Zhijie—all inspired by the art of map-making. Their pieces explore themes such as the colonial past, societal issues, identity, and historical events through diverse visual languages rooted in cartography.
Open Kaart: Reflecties brings together four artists—Gert Jan Kocken, Remy Jungerman, Jan Rothuizen, and Qiu Zhijie—whose artistic practices are deeply influenced by cartography and the act of charting. Each artist approaches the concept of mapping in a unique way, using it as a tool to analyze the past, engage with current societal issues, and express emotions.
Gert Jan Kocken delves into history by layering historical maps and documents to understand past events, exemplified by his work 'Depictions of Rotterdam 1940-1945' and 'Fission' (2023), which critically examines the creation of the atomic bomb. Remy Jungerman intertwines his artistic love for abstraction and grids with his heritage, incorporating colonial history and his Marron ancestry into works like 'Orgade' (2008), which uses map fragments and references Afro-Surinamese Winti culture. Jan Rothuizen, a draughtsman, visually maps places, people, and situations with a style blending comic art and cartography, making complex themes accessible and even creating globes for the exhibition space. Qiu Zhijie draws from Western philosophy and Chinese history to chart cultural, societal, and emotional infrastructures, likening his work to traditional Chinese ink paintings that reveal a rich world of imagination and association.
