Curatorial context

Eye Filmmuseum presents 'Cosmic Realism', the first comprehensive retrospective of the work of Véréna Paravel and Lucien Castaing-Taylor. Trained as anthropologists, they merge documentary, anthropology, and visual arts to develop a fresh film language that challenges traditional human-centered perspectives. The exhibition features seven immersive installations, tracing the development of their work which often delves into themes such as the earthly, the sea, the mind, sleep, and the apocalypse. Their approach emphasizes the physical and sensory, offering intense and thought-provoking experiences by viewing the world from non-human viewpoints. For their film 'De Humani Corporis Fabrica' (2022), they created an eight-screen installation based on extensive research in Parisian hospitals, delving into the human body and the experiences of patients and medical staff. In their well-known film 'Leviathan' (2012), they explored the relationship between man and sea by filming for months on a fishing vessel, using cameras from the perspective of the fish, seagulls, and the sea itself.
