Curatorial context
Museum Het Schip presents 'Sanar gozando. Saborear la tierra cálida que toca mi piel,' a powerful textile art installation by Cristina Flores Pescorán. This expansive work draws inspiration from the intricate weaving techniques of the Chancay culture, an ancient civilization that thrived along Peru's central coast between 1200-1470, combining them with other ancestral methods. Through this fusion, Flores Pescorán creates 'magical textile sculptures' that convey her deeply personal understanding of healing. The full title, translated as 'Healing through joy. Taste the warm earth that touches my skin,' highlights the work's thematic core.
The artist began this series of textile pieces after discovering symptoms of skin depigmentation, later diagnosed as skin cancer. Her creative process became a journey inspired by personal healing rituals involving medicinal plants and elements believed to generate energy and mend wounds within her body, her birthplace, and her family history. Flores Pescorán views this textile work as a self-portrait of her expanding body, perpetually renewing itself and offering protection. It represents a physical, circular system that engages in a dialogue with the magical, the cyclical, and her ancestors from Peru's northern coast. The impressive installation spans eight by five meters and will be on display during the first five months of the temporary exhibition 'Ongekend Talent. Vrouwen van de Amsterdamse School.'
