Exhibition summary

This exhibition explores the often-overlooked connections between the Cape colony and Utrecht, focusing on the history of slavery and its enduring legacies. It highlights South Africa's involvement in Indian Ocean slavery and its largely forgotten impact in the Netherlands.

Curatorial context

The exhibition CAPE X UTRECHT: Hidden histories of Slavery & its afterlives dives into the relationship between the Cape colony and Utrecht, particularly in light of the Dutch government's recent apologies for its involvement in slavery. It questions why the history of Indian Ocean slavery, which deeply affected people in current-day South Africa, is largely forgotten in the Netherlands. The exhibition details the historical context, from the presence of indigenous peoples in Southern Africa to the establishment of the Dutch East India Company settlement in 1652 and its reliance on an inhumane system of slavery by 1658, a system that also linked Utrecht to the Cape and laid the foundation for apartheid. This collaborative project between HKU fellow Nancy Jouwe and The Black Archives features unique archival material and artworks by Jasper Albinus, Diana Ferrus, Neo Muyanga, Shishani Vranckx, Judith Westerveld, Farren van Wyk, and Carine Zaayman. It aims to shed light on these hidden histories and their ongoing relevance. A public program, including guided tours, a conference, artist talks, and city walks, is offered throughout the exhibition period.
