This multimedia exhibition delves into the underexposed history of Dutch visual representations of Black people, from the colonial period to the present day. It showcases colonial imagery and highlights the ongoing resistance against racism through unique archival materials and contemporary art.

Curatorial context

The exhibition 'Facing Blackness: Visual Representations of Black People and Their History of Resistance' offers a comprehensive look at the visual narrative of Black individuals in the Netherlands and their long history of resistance against racism. Utilizing unique archival materials from The Black Archives (TBA), alongside contributions from other institutions, private collections, and visual artists, the exhibition critically examines how colonial portrayals have shaped Dutch cultural archives and public perception. It concurrently showcases the persistent resistance against various forms of racism and the active role Black individuals have played in defining their own culture and identity. Artists Gloria Holwerda, Jaasir Linger, Lydienne Albertoe, and Sherida Kuffour contributed by researching and creatively interpreting the exhibition's themes. Notably, Lydienne Albertoe's research on visual representations of Black people in comic books was transformed into an installation, supported by Het Zuidelijk Toneel (HZT), an organization dedicated to projects highlighting the African diaspora.

Admission and ticket notes

Tickets are €10 for general admission, €7.50 for students, teens (11-18 years), and seniors (65+). Children aged 0-10 enter for free. Group tours can be organized upon request. Visitors are encouraged to donate books, objects, or visual images containing stereotypical images or stories of resistance to enrich the exhibition and collection.
