Curatorial context

The Geelvinck Pianola Museum presents "Zheng Xilin: De Hand van de Meester," an exhibition dedicated to the acclaimed Chinese artist Zheng Xilin (b. 1946). Zheng Xilin is a leading figure in traditional Chinese scroll painting, having learned the centuries-old techniques from renowned masters like Fan Zen and Prof. Jiang Zhaohe at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. His monumental scroll paintings, created with ink and watercolor on rice paper or silk, are known for their refined detail and have been exhibited internationally, including at the United Nations Headquarters in New York and in Berlin. In addition to his expertise in scroll painting, Zheng Xilin has, over the past decade, become a specialist in Tibetan Buddhist thangkas. These traditional religious paintings, meticulously crafted using ancient techniques including the application of gold leaf, are found in Buddhist temples across Asia. Zheng Xilin is recognized as the first Han Chinese artist to gain international acclaim in this specific sacred art form. The exhibition features a particularly valuable 12-meter-long thangka with gold leaf, underscoring the depth and breadth of his artistic practice. This exhibition also commemorates 40 years of diplomatic relations between the Netherlands and the People's Republic of China, presented in collaboration with The Silk Road Ecological Culture Committee in Peking and supported by the Netherlands-China Society (VNC).
