Bruges Soundscape Update: Belfry Carillon Silenced for Melody Changes Near Gezellehuis
A quiet spell is coming to the historic center of Bruges. Visitors wandering through the peaceful gardens of the Gezellehuis or exploring the historic streets will experience a temporary change in the city's famous auditory backdrop. Starting March 5th, the automatic carillon at the central Belfry will be temporarily silenced as it undergoes its traditional melody update.
The music will remain paused until April 4th, preparing for the debut of a fresh selection of tunes on Easter Sunday, April 5th.
The Traditional "Great Retuning" in Bruges
Every two years, the automatic carillon's drum is carefully adjusted in a time-honored manual process. This system utilizes a large mechanical drum fitted with pins that dictate the notes played. During the month-long pause, specialists will clean, inspect, and reset these pins in the drum chamber to program the new musical selection.
While the automated hourly tunes will be absent, visitors can still enjoy live performances by city carillonneur Wim Berteloot on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays between 11:00 and 12:00. However, please note that no music will be played during the week immediately preceding Easter, traditionally known as the silent week.
A Fresh Musical Selection for the City
Once the maintenance is complete, the carillon will introduce four new melodies representing different eras and local significance:
- On the Hour: Allegretto by Johan A.W. Wagenaar, a piece bringing Romantic-era classical styling to the city center.
- Quarter Past the Hour: The main theme from BRUSK forms in motions by Patrick Hamilton, a contemporary concerto created specifically to mark the opening of the new BRUSK art hall.
- On the Half Hour: Grandfather’s Clock by Henry Clay Work, providing a universally recognizable tune.
- Quarter to the Hour: Andante from Symphony 94 (the Surprise Symphony) by Joseph Haydn, selected to highlight the resonance of the carillon's deepest bass bell.
