Gezellehuis and the Bruges Museum Network Celebrate a Rare Art Reunion at the Groeningemuseum
While exploring the rich literary history of Bruges at the Gezellehuis—the peaceful birthplace and garden of poet Guido Gezelle—culture enthusiasts have another compelling reason to visit the city's historic center. Musea Brugge has announced a major historic collaboration that brings two long-separated masterpieces back together in Belgium.
Beginning 16 June 2026, a remarkable joint display will take place at the nearby Groeningemuseum, showcasing the deep connection between local heritage and global collections.
A Century-Long Journey from London to Tokyo and Back to Bruges
The two panels, which depict narrative scenes from the lives of Saint James and Saint John, originally belonged to the same workshop. Although the painter's identity and the original destination of these works remain a mystery, they shared a common home in London under an art dealer in 1909.
The paintings were subsequently separated. The Bruges Municipal Museums purchased one panel with assistance from the Friends of Musea Brugge, while the other was acquired by Kojiro Matsukata, a prominent art collector from Japan.
After more than a century apart, the pieces were brought back together for a special exhibition at the National Museum of Western Art (NMWA) in Tokyo. Following that successful event, the works have traveled back to Belgium. Visitors can view them side by side at the Groeningemuseum from 16 June until 26 October 2026.
