Groeningemuseum and Bruges Belfry Update: Carillon Silence and New Melodies
Visitors exploring the historic center of Bruges will experience a quieter atmosphere over the coming weeks. The automatic carillon of the iconic Belfry (Belfort) is temporarily silent starting March 5th as technicians prepare to install a fresh selection of biennial melodies. Normal automatic musical chimes will resume on Easter Sunday, April 5th.
What to Expect During the Belfry Carillon Silence in Bruges
Although the automated daily chiming is paused, you can still hear live bell performances. City carillonneur Wim Berteloot will perform live sets on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 11:00 to 12:00. Note that these live performances will not run during the week immediately preceding Easter, traditionally known as the silent week.
The New Melodies Debuting This Spring
Every two years, the carillon's automatic playlist is refreshed. The upcoming lineup features a diverse mix of classical, modern, and traditional pieces:
- Hourly Chime: Allegretto by Johan A.W. Wagenaar, a Romantic-era piece.
- Quarter Past: The main theme from Patrick Hamilton's concerto, BRUSK forms in motions, composed specifically for the launch of the new BRUSK art hall.
- Half Hour: The globally recognized tune Grandfather's Clock by Henry Clay Work.
- Quarter To: Joseph Haydn's Andante from Symphony 94 (the "Surprise Symphony"), selected to highlight the deep tones of the carillon’s heaviest bass bell.

Changing the melodies is an intricate, manual process. Technicians physically adjust and clean the pins on a massive carillon drum, a method that has remained largely unchanged for centuries. This maintenance period also allows for a deep cleaning of the drum chamber and the drum itself.
