Groeningemuseum and Musea Brugge Unveil BRON, a State-of-the-Art Research Centre in Bruges
Musea Brugge has officially opened BRON, its brand-new scientific research facility. Serving as the intellectual core of the Bruges Museum Quarter, this new hub is set to transform how the city's historical art collections—such as the world-renowned Early Netherlandish masterpieces housed in the Groeningemuseum—are studied, preserved, and shared with the public.
Experiencing the New Bruges Museum Quarter
The development of the BRON research centre marks a major milestone for the local heritage scene. Positioned alongside the upcoming BRUSK exhibition hall and the surrounding park, the centre serves as a collaborative environment. Here, eight in-house scholars work alongside international professionals to delve into centuries of local history.
The facility consolidates several functions under one roof. It contains the central museum library, brainstorming spaces, administrative offices, and a dedicated reading room for the Print Room. This physical proximity fosters direct collaboration, ensuring that discoveries quickly influence local exhibitions and educational programs.
Looking Ahead: Collections, Restoration, and Future Access
The scientific work at the facility centers on four main academic pillars: art from the Burgundian-Habsburg era, the long nineteenth century, applied arts and craftsmanship, and contemporary culture.
To protect fragile items, a direct passageway links the research hub to the adjacent BRUSK building. This corridor allows sensitive collections of works on paper and paintings to be safely moved between preservation areas, restoration workshops, and analysis rooms.
Furthermore, starting in 2027, the specialized Print Room consultation space will open to the public inside the building. This will allow visitors and academics to study over 23,000 delicate works on paper in controlled, optimal conditions.
A New Digital Hub for Heritage Lovers
For those who wish to explore the archives from afar, the institution is improving digital outreach. The library inside the facility functions as an interactive space, combining physical print resources with digital services like online library catalogs and digital curated stories.
Research findings will regularly be translated into public-facing lectures, books, and temporary displays, making deep historical knowledge accessible to everyone visiting the city's historic core.
