Groeningemuseum Masterpiece Travels to Tokyo Before Landmark Reunion Exhibition in Bruges
A rare 16th-century artistic reunion is currently underway. The historical panel painting Scenes from the Life of Saint James and Saint John, which is part of the permanent collection in Bruges, has traveled to Japan for a unique exhibition before returning to Belgium for a highly anticipated local showcase.
For the first time in nearly 116 years, the masterpiece is hanging alongside its sister piece at the National Museum of Western Art (NMWA) in Tokyo. Both works, which share the same dimensions and are believed to have been created by the same anonymous master, were separated after leaving a London art dealer in 1909. While one was acquired for Bruges, the other was purchased by the Japanese art collector Kojiro Matsukata and eventually joined the NMWA collection. Behind the Scenes of a Delicate Journey
Moving a 16th-century wooden panel painting across the globe is a complex task. Because of its age and sensitivity to environmental shifts, the artwork required rigorous preparation.
Following thorough scientific analysis, including infrared reflectography, the painting underwent meticulous cleaning and conservation work by restorer Sofia Hennen. It was then secured in a custom-made crate, transported to Luxembourg, and flown to Tokyo. Curator Anna Koopstra accompanied the piece to ensure its safety throughout the journey.
