Reunited Masterpieces: Rare Flemish Panels on Display at the Groeningemuseum in Bruges
An extraordinary artistic reunion is taking place in Bruges. Starting on June 16, 2026, the Groeningemuseum will present two historic paintings side by side in a special temporary display. Historically, both paintings were documented in London in 1909 under the ownership of a single art dealer. Shortly thereafter, their paths diverged. One panel was acquired by the municipal museum collection in Bruges. The other was purchased by the prominent Japanese art collector Kojiro Matsukata, eventually finding its home in Tokyo's NMWA.
The paintings were reunited for the first time in nearly 116 years during a recent collaborative exhibition in Japan. Now, local art lovers and travelers to Bruges can view Scenes from the Life of Saint James and Saint John alongside its counterpart on Belgian soil for the first time.

This presentation is the culmination of a close, multi-year partnership between Musea Brugge and the NMWA in Tokyo. Since 2017, specialists from both institutions have conducted extensive art-historical and technical material analyses on the panels. This collaborative effort also included a detailed restoration of the Bruges painting, allowing visitors to appreciate the vibrant colors and intricate brushwork as close to their original state as possible.
