Exploring Blenheim Palace in Woodstock

Construction of the palace, originally intended as a reward for the 1st Duke of Marlborough's military victories, began in 1705. Financial backing from the Crown ceased in 1712 following political controversy, leading to a temporary halt in progress until the Duke resumed work at his own expense in 1716, finally reaching completion in 1722.

Sir John Vanbrugh was commissioned by the 1st Duke of Marlborough to design the palace in the English Baroque style. His work, often conducted alongside Nicholas Hawksmoor, proved controversial and led to significant friction with the Duchess over design taste and costs.

Following the death of the 1st Duke, the chapel was repurposed to serve as a mausoleum. A massive sarcophagus and tomb, designed by William Kent and sculpted by John Michael Rysbrack, was commissioned in 1730 and completed in 1744 when the Duke and Duchess were finally interred together.

Between 1764 and 1774, landscape architect Capability Brown executed a major English landscape garden project. His work included damming the River Glyme to create the Great Lake and submerging parts of Vanbrugh's grand bridge to better integrate it into the naturalized setting.

Facing severe financial hardship, the 7th Duke of Marlborough petitioned Parliament to break the palace's protective entailment. The passing of the Blenheim Settled Estates Act in 1880 allowed for the dispersal of significant parts of the family's art and library collection to pay off debts.

Following his 1895 marriage to Consuelo Vanderbilt, the 9th Duke funded a massive restoration of the palace. This included redecorating the west staterooms with gilded boiseries inspired by Versailles and hiring Achille Duchêne to create new water gardens.

Blenheim Palace was officially designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987, recognizing its architectural significance as a masterpiece of the English Baroque style.
