Stay Stoned: A Cannabis and Tattoo Exhibition at Amsterdam's Hash Marihuana Hemp Museum
The Hash Marihuana Hemp Museum in Amsterdam is currently hosting a compelling temporary exhibition titled "Stay Stoned: Madness, Cannabis & Tattoos." This unique presentation delves into the intricate relationship between tattoo artistry and cannabis culture, offering a vibrant and creative exploration for visitors. The exhibition is on view until April 23, 2023, providing a limited opportunity to experience this distinctive cultural fusion.
Exploring Tattoo Art and Cannabis Culture
Visitors to "Stay Stoned" will find themselves immersed in a setting designed to evoke a classic tattoo parlor, situated within the museum's Hemp Gallery. This location holds particular significance, as it was formerly home to Henk Schiffmacher’s Amsterdam Tattoo Museum. The exhibition showcases over forty original sheets of marihuana tattoo 'flash' – pre-designed tattoo artwork – which are being displayed to the public for the first time. These contemporary designs from the Stay Stoned project are presented alongside a curated selection of related images and objects from the Hash Marihuana Hemp Museum collection.
Adding another layer to the narrative, a unique collection of crowdsourced photographs and personal stories highlights the shared experiences and interconnectedness of the two subcultures. The exhibition celebrates how cannabis has influenced artistic expression within the world of tattooing.
Guest Curators and the History of Cannabis Imagery
"Stay Stoned" is developed in collaboration with Gilberto Cannarozzi and Samuele Salvadori, the compilers of the Stay Stoned book series, who also serve as guest curators. Samuele Salvadori, known as Sam Boy, is an Italian tattoo artist specializing in traditional styles, with cannabis often featuring as a recurring theme in his work. Gilberto Cannarozzi is a multidisciplinary Italian artist based in the Netherlands, with a strong background in graphic design and fanzines. Their collaborative Stay Stoned project explores cannabis tattoo flash by contemporary artists, with a second volume currently in the works after the first limited edition quickly sold out.
The exhibition highlights contributions from renowned tattoo artists selected by Cannarozzi and Salvadori, including Danny Boy, Jondix, Bill Loika, Robert Ryan, and Henk and Morris Schiffmacher. Their visually striking designs reflect personal interpretations and celebrations of cannabis. The show also traces the evolution of cannabis tattoos, noting their rise as a subcultural phenomenon in the 1960s and 70s, moving beyond traditional boundaries to incorporate symbols like cannabis leaves, cartoon characters, and intricate molecular structures.
