East Indiaman Replica Temporarily Inaccessible at Amsterdam's National Maritime Museum for Bowsprit Repairs
The iconic East Indiaman (VOC ship) replica at the National Maritime Museum (Scheepvaartmuseum) in Amsterdam is currently unavailable to visitors. Starting March 11, 2024, the ship has been temporarily taken out of operation to undergo essential maintenance on its bowsprit.
This temporary closure is due to the bowsprit being found in poor condition, a discovery made during recent maintenance on the ship's bow in 2023. Wood pressure measurements conducted at the museum pier indicated the need for repair. The vessel is being serviced at Damen Shiprepair Oranjewerf.
The repair work is anticipated to be completed within two weeks. The museum aims to have the East Indiaman back at its pier and open to the public by March 21, 2024. Further details on this maintenance are available directly from the museum.
Planning Your Visit to Amsterdam's Maritime Museum
While the East Indiaman is a highlight for many, the National Maritime Museum offers numerous other exhibitions exploring Dutch seafaring history, navigation, and shipbuilding. Visitors can still explore the museum's extensive collections and various displays during this period.
The VOC ship has a history of dedicated upkeep, having previously undergone a five-month maintenance period in 2020 to ensure its preservation. This ongoing care reflects the museum's commitment to maintaining its historic vessels for future generations.
