National Maritime Museum in Amsterdam Unveils MARTAN Fashion Collaboration
The National Maritime Museum (Het Scheepvaartmuseum) in Amsterdam is collaborating with fashion brand MARTAN to launch a unique limited edition collection. This special release celebrates the museum's upcoming exhibition, "Oceanista – Fashion & Sea," which explores the deep influence of the maritime world on contemporary style.
Exploring Maritime Style: The MARTAN x National Maritime Museum Collection
MARTAN, a brand with a strong connection to nautical history due to its establishment in a former shipyard, frequently integrates maritime themes into its designs. For this collaboration, designers Diek and Douwe explored the museum's extensive archives, drawing inspiration from historical drawings, captivating stories, and various artifacts.
The resulting collection features distinct designs, including a print inspired by a swirling, striped handkerchief, reminiscent of a sailor's farewell. Another design incorporates a screen print of a circa 1675 sketch by artist Gerrit Pompe, depicting ships on the Kaag, applied to an oversized shirt. The iconic MARTAN 8 knot also makes an appearance in the designs. The collection offers a range of items such as shirts, a top, a scarf, a cap, and a key ring.
Oceanista: Fashion & Sea Exhibition in Amsterdam
The collaboration is a prelude to the "Oceanista – Fashion & Sea" exhibition, set to open on October 10, 2025, and run until April 12, 2026. This exhibition at the National Maritime Museum will delve into how the sea has inspired leading designers and shaped fashion trends throughout history. Visitors can find more details about the upcoming show on the museum's official page for Oceanista – Fashion & Sea.
