Discover 'The Century of Juliana' at Nieuwe Kerk Amsterdam
Nieuwe Kerk Amsterdam invites visitors to explore a significant chapter of Dutch history with its exhibition, "The Century of Juliana." This extensive presentation focuses on Queen Juliana of the Netherlands, offering a detailed look at her extraordinary reign and the transformative twentieth century she navigated. The exhibition runs from Saturday, October 15, 2022, to Sunday, April 9, 2023.
A Deep Dive into a Transformative Reign
Marking the 75th anniversary of her inauguration, this exhibition provides a multifaceted biography of Queen Juliana. Often remembered as a "monarch next to the red carpet," admired for her simplicity and humanitarian approach, Juliana led the Netherlands through a period of immense change. Her reign (1948–1980) encompassed post-war reconstruction, the independence of Indonesia and Suriname, the Cold War, and significant social shifts like the arrival of guest workers, the introduction of the state pension, and secularisation. The exhibition juxtaposes her personal journey with these monumental events, offering context and a personal portrayal of this remarkable monarch. Through film and audio, visitors can hear memories and insights from a range of historians and public figures, painting a vivid picture of her life and ideals.
A Rich Collection Bringing History to Life
Set within a spectacular palace-like environment, the exhibition transports visitors into Juliana’s royal world and key moments in Dutch history. Over four hundred objects are on display, including personal belongings, fine art, historical documents, and photography. Highlights range from her iconic inauguration dress and colorful Surinamese angisas (headscarves) to her distinctive glasses, children’s clothes, and even her monogrammed Rolls Royce. More than one hundred items are on loan from the Royal Collections, which serves as the largest contributor to the exhibition. Further objects are drawn from dozens of museums and private collections, providing a comprehensive view. The Nieuwe Kerk also undertook a nationwide journey with a special "red, white and blue Juliana van" to collect personal stories and anecdotes from eyewitnesses, a selection of which is featured in the exhibition.
