Nieuwe Kerk Amsterdam Prepares for WorldPride 2026 with 'Queer Amsterdam' Exhibition
Amsterdam's historic Nieuwe Kerk is set to play a central role in the opening of WorldPride 2026, hosting a major exhibition titled 'Queer Amsterdam, the Pink City.' The grand opening ceremony on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, will mark the beginning of the largest Pride celebration ever held in the Netherlands, featuring several significant premieres within and around the iconic venue. This event honors a quarter-century since Amsterdam became the first city globally to legalize same-sex marriage.
Celebrating Queer History and Identity: The 'Queer Amsterdam' Exhibition
The 'Queer Amsterdam, the Pink City' exhibition will delve into the rich and often challenging history of Amsterdam's LGBTQIA+ community. Visitors can explore a cultural-historical narrative of love, bravery, activism, and the persistent pursuit of freedom. It serves as both a retrospective and a tribute to those who have championed equality and the right to self-expression over generations.
The exhibition highlights pivotal moments in Amsterdam's LGBTQIA+ timeline, from the establishment of COC in 1946 and the dedication of the Homomonument in 1987, to the inaugural Canal Parade in 1996, the Gay Games in 1998, and the landmark legalization of same-sex marriage in 2001. While Amsterdam has long been celebrated as a beacon of open identity and love, the exhibition underscores that this freedom has always required advocacy.
This historical overview gains particular relevance today, as LGBTQIA+ communities globally face increasing challenges. The exhibition acts not only as a celebration of past achievements but also as a powerful call for continued commitment to freedom, equality, and mutual respect.
The 'Queer Amsterdam' exhibition will be on view from Thursday, July 9, 2026, through Sunday, April 4, 2027, making it a longer-running presentation than typical. It aims to engage both international visitors attending WorldPride and a broad Dutch audience, including students in the upcoming academic year. The exhibition is realized in collaboration with numerous organizations, museums, and experts, with IHLIA LGBTI Heritage serving as a key partner. Presale tickets for the exhibition are available through the official website Tickets.
Special Events During WorldPride 2026 Opening
In addition to the exhibition, the WorldPride 2026 opening includes other significant events:
Olympic Champion Mark Tewksbury at Pride Talk
The annual Pride Talk at De Nieuwe Kerk will feature Canadian Olympic medalist Mark Tewksbury, who won gold at the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games. Tewksbury, one of the first elite Olympic athletes to publicly come out in 1998, will share insights on the achievements and ongoing challenges faced by the queer community. This edition of Pride Talk is a partnership with COC Nederland, COC Amsterdam, and Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam.
Unveiling the Walk of Pride Monument
The festive evening at De Nieuwe Kerk will extend into the public space with the unveiling of a new city monument: the Walk of Pride. This installation will comprise fifty-two tiles, each commemorating a national or international trailblazer from the queer community, forming a route from Dam Square to the Homomonument at Westermarkt. The Walk of Pride is an initiative by the Homomonument Foundation, IHLIA LGBTI Heritage, and the Gay Amsterdam Association Foundation (GALA).
