Nieuwe Kerk Amsterdam Presents "The Great Indonesia Exhibition"
Nieuwe Kerk Amsterdam is set to host a significant new exhibition for its 2023–2024 winter season, titled "The Great Indonesia Exhibition." This upcoming show will immerse visitors in the extensive history and rich cultural tapestry of the world's largest archipelago.
The exhibition's narrative spans centuries, from the thriving Majapahit Empire of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries right up to contemporary Indonesia. It delves into the country's breathtaking natural landscapes and vast rice fields, exploring periods of colonial rule, the Second World War, and the Japanese occupation. The presentation also examines the evolution from ancient ancestor worship and traditional rituals to the current prevalence of global religions.
Designed as an homage to Indonesia’s immense cultural variety, the exhibition aims to offer diverse perspectives and highlight areas of historical and cultural complexity. Visitors can anticipate encountering a unique array of historical and modern art objects, artifacts, photographs, films, fashion, and music. These elements will be complemented by personal accounts from Indonesians, offering an intimate portrayal of the nation's captivating story.
This comprehensive display is the result of extensive collaboration between Nieuwe Kerk and numerous organizations and individuals across both Indonesia and the Netherlands.
