Mariette Dölle Takes the Helm as New Director of Amsterdam's Oude Kerk
The historic Oude Kerk in Amsterdam has announced the appointment of Mariette Dölle as its new director. Effective February 2022, Dölle steps into this leadership role, succeeding Jacqueline Grandjean, who successfully positioned the Oude Kerk as a prominent institution where heritage, contemporary art, and music converge.
The Supervisory Board expressed confidence in Dölle's ability to build upon the Oude Kerk's established reputation. Her proven track record in realizing impactful exhibitions that resonate with current times, combining contemporary art with historical heritage, was a key factor in her selection. The aim is to further strengthen the Oude Kerk's local connections within Amsterdam while also enhancing its international standing in the cultural sector.
Continuing the Oude Kerk's Unique Cultural Vision
Mariette Dölle shared her enthusiasm for leading the Oude Kerk, highlighting its distinct role in hosting large-scale, site-specific solo presentations by leading international artists. She emphasized the institution's success in attracting a public inspired by exceptional art projects and engaging public programs, all set within Amsterdam's oldest monument, dating back to 1306. Dölle views Amsterdam as a city where history and future continually dialogue, a dynamic she believes the Oude Kerk uniquely embodies.
The Oude Kerk is renowned for its approach to "slow curating," allowing artists ample time to develop new, site-specific works in collaboration with curators. This process ensures a deep integration of art within the church's ancient walls. Upcoming presentations are scheduled to feature artists such as Susan Philipsz, Antonio Obá, and Ibrahim Mahama, alongside a diverse public program including concerts and performances.
