Meredith Monk Exhibition Transforms Amsterdam's Historic Oude Kerk
Amsterdam's historic Oude Kerk is currently hosting a significant retrospective dedicated to the pioneering artist Meredith Monk. This extensive exhibition, running from October 21, 2023, until March 17, 2024, marks the first comprehensive overview of Monk's nearly sixty-year career. Visitors have a unique opportunity to experience her multidisciplinary work within the ancient setting of Amsterdam's oldest building. More information can be found on the Oude Kerk website.
Meredith Monk, known for her groundbreaking explorations of the human voice and her contributions to music, performance, and visual arts, seeks to create work that "affirms life and our sense of interconnectedness with each other and all living beings." Her distinctive vocal style, often described as both ancient and contemporary, finds a compelling home within the Oude Kerk, which serves as a venue for modern art.
Exploring Nearly Six Decades of Art in Amsterdam
The exhibition offers a unique journey through Monk's artistic legacy, transforming her theatrical pieces into immersive encounters. The vast space of the Oude Kerk houses video and sound installations that bring her legendary works to life beyond the stage. Notable installations include new adaptations of key pieces such as Songs of Ascension (2008), Quarry (1976), and Atlas (1991), specially reimagined for the Oude Kerk.
Adding a local touch, the interactive installation American Archaeology (1988) has been updated with a version specific to Amsterdam. Visitors are invited to contribute meaningful objects, collectively building a monument of shared memories. The exhibition also delves into Monk's role as an archivist, presenting previously unreleased interviews, sound fragments, scores, drawings, and scripts, including materials related to her recent performance, Indra’s Net.
A Unique Blend of History and Contemporary Art
Meredith Monk (born 1942, New York) is celebrated as a pioneer of interdisciplinary performance, a genre that emerged from the vibrant New York art scene of the 1960s and '70s. Her innovative compositions and performances have earned numerous accolades, including the National Medal of Arts.
The Oude Kerk's centuries-old architecture provides a unique backdrop, creating a dialogue between Monk's timeless soundscapes and the historical surroundings. The fusion highlights the church's enduring role as both a site of heritage and a dynamic space for contemporary artistic expression, mirroring Monk's ongoing exploration of spiritual, earthly, and human existence.
Beyond the Exhibition: Concerts and Collaborations
Complementing the exhibition, Meredith Monk is developing a retrospective series of live concerts for the Oude Kerk. These performances will feature a new generation of local musicians, integrating music and movement in harmony with the church's distinctive architecture.
This comprehensive presentation of Monk's work in Amsterdam is a collaborative effort curated by Beatrix Ruf in close partnership with Meredith Monk and The House Foundation for the Arts. It forms part of a two-act international collaboration, with a parallel exhibition also taking place at the Haus der Kunst in Munich.
