Oude Kerk in Amsterdam Showcases Navid Nuur's 'Amsterdam Vase' Project with Inaugural Auction
The historic Oude Kerk in Amsterdam is hosting the inaugural auction of artist Navid Nuur’s unique "Amsterdam Vase" project. This initiative features one hundred distinct vases, each crafted to embody the spirit and physical essence of Amsterdam. The first vase from this collection will be available for auction from October 20 to October 23.
Capturing Amsterdam's Spirit: The 'Amsterdam Vase' Concept
Navid Nuur's ambitious project, developed during the winter of 2024–2025, involved creating vases from local clay and materials sourced directly from Amsterdam. The artist literally imprinted these vases with the city's textures by rolling them against various urban surfaces, including façades, doors, bridges, and street furniture.
The glaze for these unique objects was also gathered from across Amsterdam, incorporating elements such as shells from the IJ, glass from local cafés, coals from a shawarma shop, ashes from a pizzeria, and silt collected from the canals. This meticulous process aims to infuse each vase with the deep history and everyday fabric of the city. For more detailed information about the creation process and the broader project, a factsheet is available more information about the vases. The project outlines a plan to auction the hundred vases one by one over the next century, with proceeds dedicated to supporting new art initiatives.
The vases are currently housed in the Iron Chapel, a historical vault within the Oude Kerk known for safeguarding significant city documents for centuries, including the Toll Privilege of 1275, which is the oldest document mentioning the name Amsterdam.
Celebrating Art and History: The Anniversary Breakfast Event
Following the auction, on Monday, October 27, an Anniversary Breakfast will take place as part of the Amsterdam 750 celebrations. During this event, Navid Nuur will personally retrieve the auctioned vase from the Iron Chapel. The breakfast will also mark the premiere of a film documenting the project and the launch of a publication detailing the making of the vases. Those interested in attending the Anniversary Breakfast can register sign up for the breakfast.
