STRAAT Museum in Amsterdam Presents FAILE: Between the Sheets, a Groundbreaking Exhibition
The STRAAT Museum in Amsterdam is set to host FAILE: Between the Sheets, the first major museum exhibition in the Netherlands dedicated to the internationally acclaimed artist duo FAILE from Brooklyn. Running from September 27, 2025, through January 18, 2026, this exhibition marks a significant milestone, tracing the 25-year journey of artists Patrick McNeil and Patrick Miller from their street art origins to their multifaceted studio practice.
Exploring FAILE's Legacy in Street Art and Contemporary Art
FAILE, founded in 1999, has been a pivotal force in the street art movement since the early 2000s, influencing its global dialogue with contemporary art. Their distinct visual language, characterized by layers, symbolism, and a foundation in printmaking and collage, draws inspiration from diverse sources such as vintage skateboard magazines and zines. The duo's work has been featured in major institutions worldwide, including the Brooklyn Museum and Tate Modern, and they have created public installations for prominent locations like Lincoln Center and Times Square. While often featuring evocative slogans, FAILE's pieces invite personal interpretation, delving into emotional, cultural, and personal depths.
Between the Sheets: From Street Interventions to Studio Creations
The exhibition, Between the Sheets, delves into the enduring influence of FAILE’s early street art interventions on their current studio work. Visitors will encounter a range of pieces, from stencil campaigns and pasted posters to monoprints, handmade prints, and expansive installations. The presentation aims to bridge the gap between their foundational public art projects and their latest creations.
A notable addition to the STRAAT Museum’s expanding permanent collection is a new installation by FAILE. This piece features three monumental fabric columns, which will hang from the museum ceiling, creating a dramatic focal point in the main hall. These towering, richly textured, and architectural works echo FAILE’s ongoing engagement with materials, sacred imagery, and public space, forming a direct connection with the surrounding street art environment.
The title, Between the Sheets, directly references the duo's printmaking origins and their early street art practice using handmade posters and stencils. It also alludes to the conceptual "in-between spaces" often explored in their art—the areas between authorship and collaboration, high and low culture, and nostalgia and critique. The exhibition includes both new pieces and archival works, such as original prints and graphic compositions on paper and textile, which underscore FAILE's belief in public dialogue and the power of imagery. Many of the works displayed in the exhibition will also be available for purchase.
