STRAAT Museum Unveils Netherlands' Longest Mural at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol
STRAAT Museum, Amsterdam's prominent institution for street art and graffiti, has partnered with Amsterdam Airport Schiphol to create an expansive new public art installation titled Time Lines. This ambitious project transforms 690 meters of construction hoarding at the airport's central transport hub into the longest continuous mural in the Netherlands, offering an engaging visual experience for millions of travelers. The artwork will remain on display until October 2027, coinciding with the renovation period of the Multimodal Hub Schiphol (MKS).
Enhancing the Travel Experience at Schiphol
The Time Lines project is a dynamic hybrid artwork that blends digital imagery with live street art interventions. Conceived by STRAAT Museum and commissioned by Amsterdam Airport Schiphol in collaboration with creative agency WINK, the installation draws inspiration from artist Paul Klee's philosophy: "A line is a dot that went for a walk." Within this context, each traveler passing through Schiphol is envisioned as a point, and every journey they undertake becomes a unique line in this unfolding narrative. The artwork aims to provide a space for contemplation amidst the airport's constant movement, enriching the passenger experience by transforming a functional construction area into a meaningful artistic landscape. The official unveiling occurred on April 16, 2026, marked by the placement of its final panel.
International Artists Bring Diverse Perspectives
Time Lines features the contributions of five internationally recognized artists, bringing a variety of styles and viewpoints to this large-scale project. The participating artists include:
- Jelmer Konjo (Netherlands)
- Kevin Ledo (Canada)
- Bianca Nemelc (United States)
- Eloise Gillow (United Kingdom)
- Pref (United Kingdom/Belgium)
This collaboration highlights both established and emerging talent, creating a diverse visual tapestry that reflects global artistry.
Witness Art in the Making: The Layover Point Atelier
Adding another layer of engagement, the Time Lines project is designed to evolve over time. The participating artists will periodically return to Amsterdam Airport Schiphol over the next two years to expand the artwork with new interventions. This creative process will unfold at a dedicated "Layover Point" — an outdoor public atelier where visitors can observe the artists at work and witness the mural's ongoing development firsthand. This unique feature offers an intimate glimpse into the creation of large-scale street art within a bustling international environment.
