STRAAT Museum Amsterdam Unveils 'ORIGINS: Family & Legacy' Exhibition
The STRAAT Museum in Amsterdam is set to host a compelling new exhibition, "ORIGINS: Family & Legacy," which will be on display from April 18 to June 8, 2025. This unique presentation offers an in-depth look into the artistic journey of renowned South African street artist Faith XLVII, alongside her son, emerging artist Keya Tama, and Keya’s father, the esteemed artist and tattooist Tyler B. Murphy.
Exploring Generations of Street Art at STRAAT Amsterdam
Visitors to "ORIGINS: Family & Legacy" can expect an intimate and revealing experience, as it marks the first joint presentation featuring Faith XLVII, Keya Tama, and Tyler B. Murphy. The exhibition will showcase a collection of new works created specifically for this event, complemented by personal memorabilia, individual artworks, and collaborative pieces including sketches, paintings, drawings, and tapestries. With Faith XLVII serving as the matriarchal inspiration behind this family collaboration, the display offers a rare glimpse into their intertwined creative paths and shared legacy within contemporary street art.
Faith XLVII is recognized globally for her diverse oeuvre, which spans large-scale murals, sculpture, video art, and various other mediums. Tyler B. Murphy, a pivotal figure in South Africa's graffiti movement during the mid-1990s, has established himself as a respected tattoo artist, sign painter, and muralist. Their son, Keya Tama, is an acclaimed artist based in New York, known for a distinctive style that combines surrealism with folklore, exploring human, animal, and nature themes through visual storytelling.
New Works and Permanent Collection Additions
In addition to the temporary exhibition, the STRAAT Museum is proud to permanently add a significant new artwork by Faith XLVII to its growing collection. The museum will also introduce a collaborative father-son canvas by Tyler B. Murphy and Keya Tama, marking its first such acquisition. These new large-format pieces will be integrated into the museum's main hall, joining over 180 existing works by international and local artists.
The exhibition also coincides with the release of two new riso-books. "Alpha Omega" is a collaborative alphabet book featuring art by Faith XLVII and Tyler B. Murphy, with accompanying texts by Faith and her mother, Claire. The second book highlights Keya Tama's imaginative animal imagery, presented with an aesthetic inspired by linocuts.
The "ORIGINS: Family & Legacy" exhibition has been made possible through a continuing partnership with ABN AMRO, underscoring their commitment to STRAAT’s Women in Street Art campaign and their dedication to promoting equal opportunities within the arts.
