STRAAT Museum Amsterdam Presents 'Urban Artivism' with Dulk's Giant Flamingo Installation
The STRAAT Museum in Amsterdam is currently hosting a new exhibition titled "Urban Artivism," which shines a spotlight on climate change through the lens of street art and graffiti. Launched on October 13, 2023, the exhibition features 15 selected artworks from the museum's permanent collection, culminating in a striking 7-meter-high flamingo installation by renowned Spanish "artivist" Dulk. The exhibition is set to run until January 28, 2024.
A Call to Action: Dulk's Flamingo and Climate Awareness
At the heart of "Urban Artivism" is Dulk's monumental flamingo sculpture, a new addition to the museum's extensive collection. The artwork serves as a powerful commentary on the global threats faced by flamingo habitats, particularly highlighting the challenges in Spain's Albufera nature park near Valencia. The artist's philosophy, "Protect what you love," drives the piece, drawing attention to declining water levels in wetlands due to drought and pollution caused by climate change.
Dulk's installation confronts visitors with two realities: the visible beauty of a flamingo searching for food, and the unseen detritus submerged beneath the water, making survival increasingly difficult for these creatures. Through this contrasting imagery, the artwork aims to raise awareness about ecological preservation and the urgent need to protect endangered ecosystems.
