The Black Archives Publishes Action Research on Anti-Black Racism in Amsterdam
The Black Archives in Amsterdam has released findings from its action research focused on anti-Black racism within the city. This initiative, commissioned by the Municipality of Amsterdam, delves into how individuals experience and address anti-Black racism, and explores collaborative strategies with Black communities to combat it effectively. The project reflects a broader acknowledgment of systemic issues that impact residents.
The research context includes the significant #BlackLivesMatterNL protests of summer 2020, which saw over 50,000 people demonstrating in solidarity against anti-Black police violence internationally and institutional racism in the Netherlands. These protests highlighted that anti-Black racism is not merely a series of isolated incidents, but rather a deeply embedded structural problem.
Understanding Structural Racism in Amsterdam
Reports and studies conducted over recent decades consistently reveal that discrimination and racism manifest in various societal areas, including education, the job market, ethnic profiling by law enforcement, and even sports. These findings underscore a persistent structural challenge within Dutch society. Black communities across the Netherlands, particularly in Amsterdam, have consistently brought attention to the diverse forms of racism they encounter.
The Municipality of Amsterdam had already tasked The Black Archives with this action research prior to the 2020 #BlackLivesMatter protests. The goal was to gain a deeper understanding of the lived experiences of anti-Black racism and to develop community-led solutions. Similar research efforts are also underway to address other forms of discrimination, such as Islamophobia, anti-LGBTQ+ violence, and antisemitism. The comprehensive 'White Paper: action research anti-Black racism in Amsterdam' is available for public download, offering detailed insights into the findings and recommendations here.
