Afropean - Notes from Black Europe: A Photographic Exhibition by Johny Pitts

This exhibition showcases the photographic work of Johny Pitts, documenting his journey across Europe to explore the experiences and identities of Black European communities. The collection of black-and-white images captures everyday urban scenes and the nuanced realities of Black life on the continent, reflecting themes of belonging and underrepresented histories.

Writer and photographer Johny Pitts embarked on a journey across Europe, from London to Moscow and beyond, to examine his place as a Black European and to document the diverse lives of the continent's Black communities. This exhibition, 'Afropean - Notes from Black Europe,' presents a selection of black-and-white photographs from this exploration. Pitts captures impressions of everyday urban landscapes—graffiti, snowy streets, silhouettes, and metro stations—creating a poetic interplay with his written accounts. The images focus on multicultural, working-class enclaves and the characters within them, who often wander lost in thought, highlighting the underexposed histories of Black Europeans and the complex, often misrepresented, realities they inhabit. The exhibition is realized in conjunction with the Dutch translation of his book, "Afropean: Notes from Black Europe," published by Uitgeverij De Geus. Pitts' work has received significant recognition, including the Jhalak Prize, the Leipzig Book Prize of European Understanding, and the European Essay Prize. He is also the founder of the online platform Afropean.com. This exhibition was created by Foam and Forum on European Culture, and curated by Johny Pitts and Foam.

Entry to the exhibition costs €5,-. Opening hours are Thursday to Saturday, from 11 AM to 5 PM. The Black Archives is accessible for individuals with physical disabilities and wheelchair users, located on the ground floor.
