Exhibition summary

Arabidopsis Symphony is a digital art installation that transforms plant data into music. Visitors can explore the inner life of the Arabidopsis Thaliana plant through an augmented reality experience, where local environmental data influences an ever-changing musical composition.

Curatorial context

How does it sound when plants compose music? From June 27th, the hidden world of plants unfolds at the Artisplein. Arabidopsis Symphony invites visitors to explore the inner life of the Arabidopsis Thaliana plant through a captivating digital experience. By scanning a QR code on the square, visitors can witness larger-than-life plants and their unique symphonies. This installation uses augmented reality combined with a constantly evolving musical composition to reveal the hidden processes within plants. The music is directly linked to data collected from the Arabidopsis Thaliana plant, which is influenced by local environmental factors such as temperature and the time of day. This dynamic connection allows for an infinite array of musical possibilities, ensuring that no two compositions are ever the same, with each plant contributing its own individual part, much like musicians in an orchestra. Arabidopsis Symphony aims to bridge art and science, translating abstract data into an experience accessible to everyone. It prompts reflection on how plants might control the music we compose and the impact of environmental changes on their growth processes. By making this data tangible and experiential, the exhibition offers profound insights into the plant world. Within the Groote Museum, where the connection between humans, plants, animals, and microbes is central, Arabidopsis Symphony provides a perspective from the plant's point of view, fostering a new appreciation for the interconnectedness of all life on Earth. Daily Gatherings in the museum will further guide visitors into the world of Arabidopsis Symphony.
