Exhibition summary

The former Tandwielenfabriek, a 1920s factory building in Amsterdam, has been transformed into a residential complex featuring twelve lofts. The project, completed in 2015, aimed to preserve the building's industrial character, including its distinctive saw-tooth roof, while adapting it for modern living.

Curatorial context

Located in the city center, the former Tandwielenfabriek, originally built in 1920 as a mattress factory and later used for gear production until the mid-1980s, has been redeveloped into a residential complex. After a period of vacancy and plans for demolition, the building was purchased in 2013 and transformed in 2015 by Ronald Janssen Architecten in collaboration with Donald Osborne Architect. The project focused on retaining the industrial essence of the brick building with its characteristic saw-tooth roof, now housing twelve lofts each ranging from 133 to 180 square meters. These lofts feature two saw-tooth roofs and a ceiling height up to seven meters, offering an industrial feel. They are delivered 'casco+', meaning essential installations are present, but residents can freely arrange the interior layout. Each unit has its own entrance from the street, and former loading bay areas now house small outdoor gardens, maintaining the building's introverted character within the urban environment.
