This exhibition delves into the multifaceted nature of masculinity in contemporary society, particularly in response to the rise of the 'manosphere'. It features works by 35 intergenerational artists exploring power, identity, intimacy, queerness, and vulnerability beyond dominant clichés.
The exhibition 'Beyond the Manosphere – Masculinities Today' confronts the urgent question of what it means to be a man today, in the context of the 'manosphere' and its associated misogynistic rhetoric. It features an intergenerational group of 35 artists whose works, created from the 1960s to the present day, investigate masculinity as a performance of power, a lived reality that can be conflicting and tender, and a broad, layered phenomenon. Early works by artists such as Miguel-Ángel Cárdenas, Eduardo Paolozzi, and Sophie Calle place masculinity within historical contexts of modernity, consumerism, and psychoanalysis. More recent and new works by artists like Arlette, Sara Sadik, and Salman Toor approach masculinity from perspectives of intimacy, queerness, labor, race, class, fetishization, vulnerability, and popular culture, revealing masculinity not as a stable identity but as a contested field of representations, desires, and contradictions where dominance coexists with fragility.
Several new works and performances have been created specifically for this exhibition. Reba Maybury, Jasmine Gregory, Sven Gex, Hamishi Farah, and SoiL Thornton contribute pieces that explore power dynamics, wealth framing, contemporary culture's influence on masculinity, and site-specific installations. Zhana Ivanova will present a new performance examining how masculinity is suggested through gestures and movements. The exhibition is organized by the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam in collaboration with the Kunstmuseum St. Gallen, Switzerland, where it will travel.
