Following the outbreak of the English Civil War in 1643, Jonson relocated with his family to the Northern Netherlands. He initially settled in Middelburg, where he was immediately commissioned to paint the city's elite. He continued his work in Amsterdam, The Hague, and Middelburg again, before finally establishing himself in Utrecht in 1652, where he remained a leading portraitist until his death. The exhibition features his diverse portfolio, which exclusively comprises portraits ranging from small miniatures to larger group portraits, demonstrating remarkable flexibility and resilience throughout his career.
