Exhibition summary

This exhibition showcases works by modern artists like Max Liebermann and Pavel Feinstein, offering unique, non-traditional interpretations of biblical figures and stories. Visitors are invited to explore these diverse perspectives from both art historical and cultural historical viewpoints.

Curatorial context

Rebekka, dat ben ik features works from contemporary artists including Max Liebermann, Lesser Ury, Ludwig Meidner, Jacob Steinhardt, Ephraïm Moses Lilien, and Pavel Feinstein. These artists present distinct, non-traditional visions of biblical individuals and narratives, challenging viewers from both art historical and cultural historical perspectives. The exhibition encourages a fresh engagement with age-old stories. In conjunction with the artworks, author and storyteller Bertien Minco provides personal audio narratives at four selected pieces. Drawing from her childhood memories in a Jewish family in Groningen, Minco reflects on her upbringing and her daughter Merav's differing relationship with the Bible due to a less religious early life. The works displayed are on loan from the Joods Museum Berlin, facilitated by the Bijbels Museum's loan of a model of the Temple Mount/Haram al-Sharif for their exhibition _Welcome to Jerusalem_.
