This exhibition explores the profound influence of Islamic architecture and mosaic patterns on M.C. Escher's iconic graphic works, showcasing his early fascination sparked by visits to the Alhambra. It bridges Escher's art with contemporary artists who engage with Islamic cultural heritage.
M.C. Escher, renowned for his intricate graphic works that play with perspective, space, and repetition, found significant inspiration in Islamic architecture and mosaic patterns during his travels to the Alhambra. This exhibition, 'Escher & Islamic Art: 20 Perspectives,' delves into this lesser-known aspect of his artistic journey, highlighting how the rhythmic, repeating motifs he observed became a foundational element for his extensive research into tessellations. The exhibition goes beyond Escher's direct influence, actively bringing together his work with that of twenty contemporary national and international artists across diverse disciplines. These artists, including Karim Adduchi, Shirin Neshat, and Hassan Hajjaj, also engage with Islamic cultural heritage in their own practices, creating a rich dialogue between historical inspiration and modern artistic expression. Featuring 30 works ranging from painting and sculpture to photography, ceramics, fashion, and textiles, the exhibition offers a unique perspective on the enduring power of Islamic patterns and their continued resonance in contemporary culture, with many international pieces being shown in the Netherlands for the first time.
