Curatorial context

Her (s)tories is an ode to our female ancestors, presenting an impactful narrative, musical, and poetic theatrical experience focused on the untold stories of women within the Hindustani migration history. The performance intricately blends word art, dance, song, spoken word, music, and visual arts into a sensory journey through Dutch history. Theatermaker and writer Shantie Singh, along with her co-narrators, guides the audience through personal and collective stories that highlight the layered and often unknown aspects of Hindustani migration in the Netherlands. The production touches upon universal themes such as strength, migration, identity, colonial legacy, and womanhood, aiming to resonate with both the Surinamese-Hindustani community and a broader urban audience. Her (s)tories pays tribute to women who have long remained invisible, from early kantraki women and resistance heroines like Janey Tetary to grandmothers, mothers, and pioneering Hindustani artists such as Diana Gangaram-Panday and Annie Bodha. Their narratives encompass not only pain and vulnerability but also resistance, language, love, emancipation, and artistic breakthroughs. Following sold-out shows in cities like The Hague, Amsterdam, and Rotterdam, this highly acclaimed performance arrives at this theatre, promising an evening that will resonate deeply.
