Created in 2022 using organza, silk, velvet, glass beads, and cotton thread, the large-scale piece (190 x 270 cm) juxtaposes traditional craft with politically charged subject matter. Overheul, who grew up in a religious environment where gender equality was not assumed, uses soft materials to address hard-hitting themes. The work reimagines the moment of the Fall, drawing inspiration from the left panel of Jheronimus Bosch's 'Garden of Earthly Delights'. In her interpretation, the roles of Adam and Eve are presented in a way that questions the historical narrative which has long blamed women, like Eve, for humanity's expulsion from paradise. Overheul highlights how this narrative has contributed to the perception of women as cunning and untrustworthy. The artwork serves as a commentary on contemporary society's treatment of women who speak out against misconduct, drawing parallels between the biblical story and present-day attitudes. 'Piëta' is presented as an entry for the Open Call EXODUS, a collaboration between the Bijbels Museum and Buitenplaats Doornburgh.
